Women’s Basketball Falls to Penn in Overtime, 49-46

HAMILTON, N.Y. (12/7/08) -   Patricia Oakes (Evergreen, Colo.) led all players with 16 points but the Colgate University women’s basketball team fell to the University of Pennsylvania, 49-46 in overtime at Cotterell Court.  
 
Freshman Kelly Korkowski (Williamsburg, Va.) had a career-high 10 points and six rebounds, with Georgia Gier (Mercer Island, Wash.) adding eight points, two blocks and a team-high seven rebounds.  Oakes also added four boards, two blocks and two steals.  Cattie Biemer led the Quakers with 15 points and 10 rebounds. 
 
Freshman Candice Green (East Brunswick, N.J) was the first to score in a first half that featured three lead changes and four ties.  The opening minutes were back-and-forth with the score tied at 8-8, 7:39 into the game.  Tyler Cumbo hit a three with 11:08 remaining in the half to give the Quakers their first substantial lead of the game, 11-8.  Korkowski scored six points and Green added a basket, but Penn still led by three, 21-18, heading into half-time.
 
Colgate (2-8) shot 30.4 percent in the first half and went 4-6 from the free throw line, with Sami Kozlowski (New Market, Md.) going 4-4 from the charity stripe.  Penn (2-6) shot 27.6 percent from the field and were 1-9 from three-point range.
 
The Raiders came out strong in the second half, down by just one, 26-25, after 5:44 in the half.  Oakes led Colgate with five points in the opening minutes.  Penn responded with back-to-back 3-pointers, from Biemer and Kelly Scott, to gain a seven point lead, 32-25, with 11:42 on the clock. 
 
Colgate then went on a 8-2 run, led by Gier and Oakes with four points apiece.  A minute later, Gier knocked down two free throws to give the Raiders a one point lead with 3:09 remaining in regulation.  Quaker’s Caitlin Slover was fouled on a good lay-up and made the extra point to put Penn up 37-35 with just over a minute in the game.  With six seconds on the clock Gier was fouled and hit both free throws to tie the game and send it into overtime.  
 
Both teams were scoreless in the first 1:25 of overtime, but Penn scored first to gain a 39-37 advantage.  Green and Oakes had back-to-back baskets to give Colgate a 41-39 lead with 2:28 on the clock.  Penn’s leading scorer, Biemer, knocked down a three and went 2-2 from the free throw line to give the Quakers a three point lead.  Korkowski went 2-2 from the line, but Biemer hit another three for a four point advantage 47-43 with under a minute on the clock.  Oakes was fouled on a good lay-up and put in the extra point to make it a one point game with 26 seconds remaining, but Penn was able to hold on in the final seconds for the win.
 
The Raiders shot 32.7 percent from the field for the game.  Penn finished with 30.9 percent shooting and were 10-12 from the free throw line.  The Quakers out-rebounded Colgate 39-30.
